Things you did not know about Bangkok
In the Guinness Book of World Records, Bangkok has been noted as the place with the longest name: Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit. It was originally a small village, trading center and port community on ashore of the Chao Phraya River.
Really charming about Bangkok is that in some parts of the city, you can still have the feeling of being in this little village what it used to be. Take for example the floating markets: you leave your hotel in Bangkok, take a look at the buildings and the city, admire the size and outlook. Then you come across one of the small canals that go through the city and you see a woman from the countryside selling her handmade products for the tourists. The contrast between modern and ancient can be seen in Bangkok.
Water is everywhere in Bangkok. The city is called as the Venice of the East or the Venice of Asia due to the various channels. Bangkok has been built in the area which is only 2 meters above the sea level. Interesting fact is that the city is sinking about 1 or 2 cm per year. The ground is making troubles for the architects as you can imagine.
Do not worry, there are more to see than just water in Bangkok. After taking your breakfast in one of the five star hotels in Bangkok, you can go out to visit the city and the sights. Wat Phra Si Ratana Sasadaram, also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is beautiful and worth of seeing. It is the most important Buddhist temple in Thailand. In the temple you can see the Emerald Buddha, which is made of jade. There are also many temples in the city but they are fairly recent: None of them is older than 240 years.
Perhaps you want to see colourful Chinatown, founded in the 1700s by Chinese immigrants. It is full of Chinese ancestral traditions and restaurants. If you want to swim with the delphins, go to Siam Ocean World. It is an underground aquarium with thousands of species, which you can feed and swim with.
It is good to know that there is a good railway network and from Bangkok you can easily take a bus to visit other interesting cities in Thailand. If you make a reservation to the hotel at Bangkok for the dates when there are festivals, you may have the chance to see the king and the queen, who are loved and respected by the people of Thailand.
You should give yourself a chance to see Bangkok. You will enjoy your journey!
